  • Sustainable wastewater treatment in a food factory

A food manufacturer used an inorganic salt of aluminum with pH correction to treat their wastewater. This chemical regime gave them no real control over the nature of their streams. Their wastewater streams required a constant monitoring and adjustment.

The inability to manage the nature of the currents meant that the manufacturer did not meet the requirements for the discharge of the waste. Which attracted great interest from regulators. The irregular chemical dosing meant that the amount of chemicals used was much too high, this also created large amounts of sludge offsite.

Operating in an environmentally friendly way is something that all companies strive for. Achieving this environmental objective , on the basis of regulations and all other legal requirements are financially very challenging.

With the help of the wastewater specialists of Atana, the food manufacturer changed its wastewater in organic aluminum salt to Cofloc ®. In a sustainable and biodegradable chemical regime.

Atana also helped to make changes in their pH - correction system and this resulted in a stable nature of the waste streams which complied with the corresponding standards. So there were fewer monitoring visits. Cofloc ® reduced the chemical cost by 40% and a minimum sludge reduction of 50%.

    Problem / Definition

Atana got the command at a dairy to reduce the sludge in the waste streams by introducing a new chemical regime. This would bring a substantial saving on their daily running costs, reduce the need for the use of hazardous substances and prevent possible corrosive matters by means of the removal of inorganic chemicals. The dairy also has discharge problems resulting from high suspended solids and FOG values, along with problems relating to the reliability of the dosage PAC and the maintenance of the coagulation

    specific background
Current physical line in order to manage waste water

Collection tank > sieve > Balance Tank 150m ³ > DAF similar Puriflow DAF> sewer

    Values wastewater
    - Daily flow 150m ³ per 24 hours
    - 3000 COD mg / l
    - BOD 2000mg / l
    - PH 5-11
    - FOG ( Fats , Oil and Grease) 200 mg / l
    - TSS ( Total Suspended Solids ) 1000mg / l

The current chemical treatment regimen in order to manage the waste water

They used natroloog (32%) and sulfuric acid (28%) for pH - adjustment (set at 10.5) in a balance tank as required. Consumption was 1.000 liters per week against Sulfuric € 147 / 1.000ltrs, Natroloog € 305 / 1.000ltrs.

Sulfuric acid ( 28%) used for pH - adjustment in the incoming flow of the polymer mixing chamber of DAF.

    PAC as coagulant approximately 10.000 liters / 6-8 weeks to € 1.930 / 1.0000ltrs .

Anionic polymer used as Flocculant about 1.000 liters of pure product / per 12 months € 1.230 / IBC.

After dewatering sludge production amounts to 26m ³ per 10 days (3 per month max) € 1290 / tanker.

    Annual cost € 85.590,00

Atana 's chemical treatment regimen to manage wastewater

There was natroloog (32%) and sulfuric acid (28%) used for pH - adjustment (adjusted to 7.5) in the required balance tank. Consumption was 1.000 liters per 3 weeks against Sulfuric € 147 / 1000ltrs, Natroloog € 305 / 1000ltrs. This is currently being optimized.

Sulfuric acid ( 28%) used for pH - adjustment in the incoming flow of the polymer mixing chamber of DAF.

    Cofloc SG, a vegetable coagulant , replacing PAC . Cost € 696 / 1.000 liters approximately every 2 weeks.

Trufloc TF300C cationic polymer is used as flocculant about 25 liters of pure product for a period of 2,5 week for € 123 / 25kg.

Sludge dewatering without generation was equal to 26m³ every 21 days at 1.287 / tanker.
    * The dewatering of the sludge , the sludge reduction could further improve in the storage tank.

Note: Sludge samples are being analyzed for alternative methods that may put the cost of sludge treatment to a revenue stream.

    Annual cost € 50.872,00

    Resume
A summary so far: we have achieved a minimum of 50% reduction of the sludge volumes. Test samples at the laboratory of the local water showed the first time a result of FOG 25mg / l and TSS 139mg / l. The regular exporters of the wastewater treatment plant are very impressed by the consistent performance.
